In September of 2008, I got certified to be a dog trainer, and have been training pooches around Arizona for the last five years. I got certified and worked for PetSmart for about a year, and have been free-lancing since then. It's a really fun side job, and it satisfies my desire to work with animals and educate people about proper pet ownership without having to be a full time zoo keeper. (Which would be awesome.) I'll probably post random pet-related tips through this blog, and have a goal to eventually put together a full length DVD set of my training curriculum. But in the meantime, what are you all curious about? Feel free to ask any pet related questions, I'm also trained and have experience with cats, small mammals, birds, reptiles, and freshwater fish. And dogs, of course. :) Here's a few training related photos, as well as my favorite student, my pup Sydney. I'm a little biased, but she's really smart.
I just adopted an Australian cattledog mix named Shirley. She's so sweet. She's really smart and agile, but hasn't been trained. I've taught her to sit and she learned that really fast but I don't know what to do from there. Where do I start?
Congrats! New pups are such a fun and exciting adventure :) Cattle dogs are highly intelligent, and they're working dogs, so they need to feel like they have a job or they'll get bored and destroy things. Daily walks (or any exercise, since its really hot here), PLUS daily obedience training (15 mins a day) will keep her healthy and well behaved. I would say get yourself into a training class to jump-start yourself. It's a great investment and will save you loads of money as stress later on when you're not pulling your hair out about your unruly pup. PetSmart has a great one, it's 8 weeks of an hour per week, and I think it works out to be $13 a class or something like that. If you'd rather train on your own, stay away from Dog Whisperer, he's bad news, and lean more towards trainers like Victoria Stilwell. She also has a trainer find on her website where you can a trainer in your area. http://positively.com/ is her website. Good luck! And feel free to shoot me any other questions you have along the way. :)
